In 2010 David Gerlach launched a new media nonprofit called Blank on Blank. This year B on B was named a finalist in the Knight Foundation News Challenge.

The mission is simple: build and broadcast a digital archive of journalists’ unheard interviews. This is an interview archive where you can hear unexpected conversations with everyday Americans and famous names like Kelly Slater, Ricky Gervais, Bono, and more. Take a listen to filmmaker Martin Scorsese on the soundtracks that play in his movies and his life.

It’s a Storycorps for journalists and interviewers, writers and authors where raw interviews gathering dust on hard drives and cassette tapes are transformed. With a little music, some editing, and smart storytelling, entirely new audio pieces are created from interviews previously recorded only to help write a story.

This archive of the American interview is then delivered to listeners nationwide online, on mobile devices, and on the radio. Some audio gems will even be the foundation of some sweet animated shorts coming to YouTube and beyond.

David Gerlach is a writer/producer for ABC News and works on “Good Morning America” and “World News with Diane Sawyer.” He covers everything from politics to crime and has been with the network since early 2009. He has produced interviews with the likes of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and Dr. Andrew Wakefield, to top leaders in Washington and pop culture figures.

Previously, he was a producer for MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” and “Verdict with Dan Abrams” where he covered politics and national legal issues. He worked at MSNBC from 2006-2009

Before working in television, Gerlach wrote about politics for Newsweek and the New York Sun. He also has written about culture and travel for the New York Post, Time Out New York and others.

Gerlach has interviewed senators, bartenders, artists, a former Playboy Club mother bunny, a graffiti legend, economists, playground stalwarts, a son of a president, business titans and Harley riders. He has found the best interviews require two things: open-ended questions and room for the subject to fill those essential moments of silence.

An American pilgrimage descended upon Milwaukee when over 250,000 Harley-Davidson riders from around the globe came to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the motorcycle maker. Photographer Jake Herrle and David Gerlach returned to their native city to capture this cultural mecca through a combination of photographic portraits and spoken personal narratives. Bikes bind together these stories of America and they begin a family album.

“I have a famous collector Harley … a Ruby Ridge bike owned by Randy Weaver. Knew him from Montana. In 1992, the FBI shot his (Randy Weaver’s) wife and son in the mountains of Idaho. They (FBI) wanted to take over his place. They moved in on him. He was home schooling his kids. He was just minding his own business. It was a terrible episode. I ride for him. It is a freedom ride for Randy. The government shouldn’t have a right to do that.”
